Young gentleman with millstone collar

A very handsome young man, painted in oil on copper, oval 96 x 70 mm. In 19th century frame of 167 x 144 mm. The millstone collar had a Spanish origin but was special fashion in The Netherlands in the first half of the 17th century. Because of its size hair was worn short and people needed a special glass with a very long stem to drink wine.

Description Most reliable it is a portrait of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628) Since 1614 the lover of King James I of England and Scotland. He virtually ruled England during the last years of the King, even also for his son Charles I till he was killed in the war with France.
